A little recollection of MMM

It’s been more than a week since we returned. I hope everyone is well and looking forward to overcome challenges in the new year. As we reflect on what we have learnt on the trip, I felt an emotional urge to pen my thoughts after managing the exchange all these years.

Meiden.Meridian.Moichido! Part V had been an emotional trip for me. It is probably the last MMM I will manage; but rest assured it will not be the last that our band will see.

MMM started in July 2006 when Meiden first came to MJC via the introduction by Ms Sia and Mr Ong. I was put in-charge of the exchange by the band teacher i/c then. We thought long and hard for a name for the concert and finally decided on “A meiden voyage: A musical journey across the meridian” to incorporate the names of both schools into the concert theme. Times were hard then; the band exco was very new and band members had their own agenda. I still remember consoling the entire exco, who were crying in the band store the night before the concert.

In December 2006, despite organizing an overseas trip in just 4 months, we were in Nagoya for the return leg of the exchange. The key thing that made me insist on the exchange was the need for a programme to bond the members, after seeing how they came as one after the exchange in July. The result proved to be very favourable. The other thing I did not want for our band was to be just an “SYF band” and so this was one of the programmes we pushed so hard for. For the record, I did not have a very enriching band life as a student; hence I do not want our band students to suffer that same fate.

The only thing I could not come to terms with was the programme proposed by the travel agent. I do not want this trip to be “wake up-breakfast-up the bus-arrive-down the bus-hotel-sleep” routine. Other than practicing with the best from Japan, our students should acquire life skills. Hence I made some daring decisions: to stay at a ryokan with shared facilities, taking the public transport and buying their own meals; hoping it will teach members financial and social awareness. This bold move benefitted some, if not most, members in time to come; most notably one of our alumni who backpacked across the entire Japan, all by himself.

Mr Kajiyama and myself thought long and hard at the theme of the exchange. The original name was way too long and we needed something simpler, but with a bang. Up till this very day we are still talking with much fondness how we spent an entire morning on overseas calls to each other, just to talk about the names we had in mind. The moment of eureka came when we both came up with the same name, at the same time. Fate sure has its way with things in life. And “Meiden.Meridian.Moichido!” was born.

2008 was an interesting year. Noticing the potential in the JC1 cohort, we pushed forward with quite a number of programmes. The July of 2008 was insane for the members with a performance or competition every weekend, and I still recall the image of two trumpet girls sleeping while seated, with their heads resting on each other. With an extremely strong exco, I knew the sky would be our limit. MMM part II would only prove to be a blast, with tickets sold out in less than two hours. For the hard work of all the members, we decided to use some of the profits from the concert to treat the entire band to a day in Tokyo Disneyland Resort. MMM part III was something I will never forget. The alumni had a big hand in it and their help was nothing less than divine.

2010 was a huge challenge. “MMM part IV” had an awkward schedule because of the compromises made for other official events. Nonetheless, we worked around it and made the best out of it. Several obstacles came along our way but we managed to circumvent them. There would be times when frustrations got the better of me, but I would always look back on the success of the previous exchanges and pressed on.

During the sectional ice-breaker at every exchange, Mr Kajiyama would look on and comment “This is great, Wong. This is great.” My reply would somehow, always be “Isn’t this what we had been working for?” We would have this conversation every time the two bands meet. We were like broken record players.

The highlight of MMM part V for me would probably be the combined high school concert in Nagoya. “Pirates of the Caribbean” and “Armenian Dances” were what we had played for the previous exchanges in Nagoya in 2006 and 2008 respectively. As those songs were being played, I thought I saw the members from the 2006 and 2008 exchange trips, performing on the stage. It was a very emotional recollection for me. Or has fate decided to let me once again recall my wonderful memories on my last overseas trip with our band?

I hope the exchange will go on and on, true to the meaning of “Moichido” which means “one more time”. I am also very, very glad to see alumni members join the teaching profession and returning to manage the band. As much as I could not bear to let go, I have also told the band alumni that I am only managing their band until their return, and I would pass it back to them, for lack of a better term, the rightful owners and pioneers.

Thank you all, for the wonderful trip; we hope everyone had learnt something and more importantly, bonded more closely than ever before, and brace the storm ahead together. We will make it, just because we can, for we are MJCSB!

1ST OFFICIAL PRACTICE FOR JC1! / ARMY MUSEUM TRIP

Hey JC1 band members who've been yearning to get in touch with the instruments, now's the time! Your first official practice will be held on 24Feb10 on this coming Wednesday at 2.45pm and will end by 6pm. Please bring along your PE kit (JC2 as well!) as we'll also be engaging in some ice-breaker activities! If you still haven't known yet, there're only 2 official band practices each week - Wednesday (2.45pm-6pm) and Friday (5pm-8pm).

In addition, the band will be having an excursion to the Army Museum as part of the National Education on 3rd March, Wednesday afternoon. Further details will be given in due time.

Hope you're excited for it and we look forward to seeing you this Wednesday!

Band will end at 1pm instead of 12pm... So here are the schedule:

surprise!! its your dear j2s here!! we heard about your schedule and practices and all! fight on alright!! yea juggling the horrible grades-grieving period after midyears, Project Work ( never ending torture), Band Fiesta, night practices, "social" life (if you still have any!)/....

know that we've went through and still alive after that! so we know you can too!! although we're not there to give you our support, know that we do care!! remember, when you guys get stress, dont bottle it up! its fatal i tell you! so let loose when need be and have a chat with your family and friends ok!!

we will be making our way down to botanic gardens to cheer you guys on!!

Hows the exams going??

No worries, everything is going to be fine!! =D

Anw u all might have heard that there will not be any band practises for the first 2 weeks but prac will

resume by WEEK 3!!

Here are the practise days:

1) 13th July 5.30pm-9pm

2) 14th July 5.30pm-9pm

3) 15th July 5.30pm-9pm

4) 17th July 5.30pm-9pm

5) 18th July 9am-12pm

Prac will resume as per normal for the subsq weeks:

DSA auditions

those who are going to DSA to MJC, please note that the DSA audition on Saturday, 13th June 2009 is CANCELLED
due to the maintenance that the school will be undergoing on that day.

However the other DSA dates are still intact that is

TO our DEAR JC2s

For the current JC2 seniors, here are some words by Mr Wong:

"To my dearest JC2's of 2009

It seemed like yesterday when I first met some of you during DSA auditions. You still looked very pure and innocent. Time will prove that looks are deceiving ;)

Our first and major mission was the 2nd NBC in July 2008. You worked your hearts out and brought MJCSB to greater heights (not forgetting our alumni), and went through "Hell month" of July 2008. Every Sunday was for the band (actually, almost every day), for NBC, for honour bands, for botanical gardens band fiesta.... and for your good friends from Meiden High School.

What a way to end the month.

You received your counterparts with so much warmth and kindness that it just seemed like you had been friends since the beginning of time; and when it was time to split, we knew it was only for a while. The two bands will come together again in December, for Meiden.Meridian.Moichido! Part 3. The exchange bridged the ties between bandsmen of different languages, but of the same passion in making music. Up till now I still have COSMOS ringing in my head every now and then.

The band came closer than ever in Japan. Remember the daily walk was long and cold but we never felt tired. Then there was me scolding you to stop cam-whoring and keep in line; Ms Ong screaming at you to stick to bath timings; Ms Tan chasing you for money; and Ms Gan always ready to lend a hand.We had learnt so much from our friends in Meiden. We learnt to appreciate and be thankful for what we are given.

And compassion.

You cheered for your fellow bandsmen who were down. You hugged them. You cried with them. If there is ever one thing I can be proud of, this is it.

One of you asked me if I am proud of our band. This is what I have to say.
In one of my favorite shows, "Band of Brothers", a war veteran spoke of a conversation with his grandson.
"Grandpa, were you a hero in the war?"
"No," replied grandpa.
"But I served in a company of heroes."

My dearest JC2's of 2009, it has been my honour to have served you.

its february! and the J1s have arrived! :)

This wednesday, 11February would be the CCA recruitment day for the JC1s.
for the J2s ad the DSA students,
here is a gentle reminder for wednesday.

you are excused from class at 12.05.
report to bandroom immediately to move instruments, etc.
be back in the hall at 12.55pm
wear band shirt
(for DSA: wear dark coloured - preferably black shirt)
we would be performing around 1.30pm.
our band booth would be located at the atrium.

cca will commence on the 18february for the newly recruited J1s.

do invite and bring your juniors to come join band!!!

JAE 2009 2nd audition appeal

hello graduated sec 4s of 2008.

we are holding our 2nd rounds of auditions for those who are considering to appeal into MJC through band.

details:

3rd February 2009 ( tuesday )

6pm - 9pm

Bandroom ( 2nd floor overlooking the school field )

please bring along your own instruments/mouthpiece/reeds ( except for percussionists )

Remember to photocopy 2 sets of the required documents to be handed in to the general office and to the band during your interview.

- O level certificate

- testimonials

-sec 1-4 result slips

- CCA records

-CIP records
-NAPFA records

-any recommendation letters/certificates relevant for appeal.

Those who have attended the 1st appeal session (12Janurary) as well as the upcoming one (3february) will be notified by the school a.s.a.p if your appeal have been successfully granted.

NOTE: to the students who have came for the audition on 12 january, do remember to come down to MJC after you have gotten your posting results to hand in your documents and fill in the appeal form.

hey all. here are the details for those trying to appeal into MJC through band.

the auditions for the appeal will be held tomorrow:

13th January 2008 ( Tuesday)
6-9pm
Bandroom

please bring your
1. own instruments/reeds/mouthpiece.

2. photocopy these documents
- O level result slip
- Sec 1-4 result slips
- CIP record
-CCA record
-NAPFA test results
-testimonials
- any reccomendation letter
- ceertificates which you feel would substantiate your appeal

3. the original documents as mentioned above

it is advisable for you all to come around 4-5pm to settle some administrative things with the General Office.

Upon arrival in MJC,

1. go to the General Office to get an Appeal Form and fill in your particulars

2.ensure you have all the required documents photocopied and submit them to the general office

3. make your way to the bandroom to go for the interview and audition

4. ensure you have the original copy of your results and all the abovementioned documents for the teachers' reference during the interview.

Meiden.Meridian.Moichido Part III Day 2

hey guys! i'm back again with more pics! this is the pictures for Day 2! We started off our 2nd wonderful day at Japan with some shopping at Osu early in the morning before proceeding down to Aichi Meiden to meet them.
They waited for us outside their school in temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius just to greet us!
their new school buildingwe went up 5 floors to their band room and settled down before unwrapping our instruments for the 1st time and getting ready for sectionals.
ito sensei took us for combines as he helped us with some of our pieces. Time passes really quick there and soon it was time for us to make our leave.
for dinner, mr wong treated us to this great place that served delicious chicken wings.the underground railway system in Nagoya that we always took.

back at Ryokan Meiryu, sections decided to complete their gifts for Aichi Meiden students. Here is trombone section hard at work.we Excos, also did not slack and complete the gifts for the various people who made this trip successful

Machu Picchu

Though Machu Picchu is a very technically and musically demanding piece and no matter how much you dread playing the challenging parts - you gotta admit that it's such a beautiful and brilliant masterpiece. Unknowingly, you're tapping your feet to it during band (well you should stop doing it anyway!), you're humming to it every now and then and the song just goes on replay in your mind uncontrollably.

Yes, you are falling in love with Machu Picchu.

To gain a better understanding of what the piece requires, I think we should all know what the legendary city looks like (yes! it actually exists on earth) so here you go!

P.S. The video gets boring after 5 seconds, trust me. I suggest you mute it and play the song from the playlist at the right to achieve optimal effect.

Ohayou gozaimasu!!

i am terribly sorry for the delay in the uploading of the photos. we were compiling as many photos as we can from as many of you. here are some pictures from Day 1.

we were greeted by Mr kajiyama at the airport. a nice feeling to see a familiar face around!

from the airport..sorting out the luggages..

the multi-purpose hall. volley. badminton. basketball. you name it..

the teachers room.

the band members brought us around their school and introduced us to their fellow classmates! OHIO!

Just in case any of you want to know how the band jacket for our japan trip will look like,
here's a peek! it's just a draft, the colour's not exactly confirmed, but do think along the colours of gold or silver.(for the wordings) the jacket will be black. :D

Right, now for the cost matters.
COST: $28(inclusive of 7%GST)

SO RIGHT, since we need to pay deposits and all that...

J1s PLEASE pay up by THIS FRIDAY! (31 OCT)

hoho. i hope you all will like the jacket! cos i really do!

MJC's Open House

To all potential MJCians or even potential members of the MJCSB family,

MJC's open house will be held this coming Friday, 3rd of October. Come feel the meridian's heartbeat and palpitate along with us!

MJCSB will be performing at 2pm and 4pm

@ linkway connecting the hall and 2nd level staffroom
(2 and a half storey) :)

Just as how excited as you are, we're looking forward to seeing you there!

A couple of announcements

1. There will be a compulsory band practice on this thursday(2/10) in preparation for the open house on the 3rd. It'll be from 6-8pm. Please be punctual!

2. In view of CIP, we might be performing at the Cerebral Palsy centre beside us on a band prac day (wednesday or friday). The time has yet to be confirmed but it'll most probably be held after school. We'll be making our way there by foot due to the close proximity.

The decision to perform there will depend on all of our decisions.
So do vote! Thanks!

Why, hello!

Firstly, I'm sorry there's a dash in the link but the mjcsb one has been taken up by the alumnis and they can't rmb the password for that blog. Tried wordpress but it doesn't allow for Cbox and being such chatty beings, Cbox is of utmost importance to a blog!
